Even though there has been so much buzz about the keto diet for years now with thousands and thousands of success stories, bloggers, products and social media accounts dedicated to the keto lifestyle, the main question I get multiple times a day is, “How Do I Start Keto?”

Despite the abundance of information out there, I can understand why so many are still confused by how to start a keto lifestyle. I am a huge advocate of a ketogenic diet for women – especially for women over 40. After decades of struggling with my weight, trying every fad diet and even sensible eating plans, and working out consistently, I still had trouble maintaining a healthy weight and as I entered my 40s and beyond, it got that much harder. So, after researching a LOT about what the keto diet is before I got started, I was pretty sure that this would be the key for me. And I saw results immediately. Within the first few weeks, I had lost 10 pounds and the fat just melted off from there, my mood improved, my sleep improved and my skin looked better and better. Now, I’m almost three years into the keto life and definitely won’t be looking back. I’ve maintained a 55 pound weight loss for years now and have never felt or looked better — most people don’t believe me when I share that I’m approaching 50 (I’ll be 48 in January)…I have more energy than ever.

So, how to start keto?

The first thing to realize, is that the keto diet is NOT a fad diet, not something I recommend you do for a few months until you hit your goal weight and then go back to eating sugar and starchy carbs. The most important concept to come to terms with is that this is a LIFESTYLE because sugar and starchy carbs are not healthy and to maintain health and permanent fat loss with the keto diet, you have to understand that if you do start to incorporate sugar and carbs again, while you might maintain some weight loss, many of the other health benefits of keto — like mental clarity, energy and mood — can be affected. So, my answer to those who ask me how to start keto is #1 – commit to a lifestyle.

Once you’re ready and committed, get excited because living the keto life is not only great for your health and wellness, you will discover so many amazing recipes, food combinations and smart hacks so you won’t EVER feel deprived.
